HISTORY

Road Metals began as North Otago Road Metal which was formed in 1955 by the late Stan Francis, who is widely recognised as one of the great pioneers of the industry.

In 1994 North Otago Road Metal became Road Metals due to an expansion into Canterbury, and since then Road Metals has also been involved in aggregate production as far afield as Auckland.

Stan Francis started business in 1946 with a 1939 one-ton Dodge bought from the proceeds of rabbit trapping. He was contracted to buy and cart rabbits and eventually turned this stake into one of the most respected contracting businesses in New Zealand.
Three million tonne of sand and aggregate were supplied by Road Metals for the Clyde dam project, followed by the production of a million tonne of stabilisation material, and then the screening and disposal of six-million tonnes of material excavated from the Clutha River.

Among other projects since Clyde, Road Metals has supplied filter materials to Oceana Gold at both Macraes and Reefton, supplied all of the sand, aggregate and filter materials for the Opuha Dam at Fairlie, and processed 200,000 metres of gravel for the second Manapouri Tailrace Tunnel. Road Metals have supplied large volumes of bulk fill for the various Christchurch Motorway projects and have been involved with agggregate supply in Kaikoura following the 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake.

TRANSPORT

The Road Metals road transport fleet has become synonymous with immaculate presentation and dependable performance.

Few other fleets in the country can rival Road Metal’s track record of productivity and cost-efficiency, a record carved out from working under the most arduous of conditions.

Road Metals have always been innovative in their approach to the industry. Road Metals had some of the biggest truck and trailers units in the country working at Twizel a decade before most others in the industry recognised the cost effectiveness of large combinations.

Six decades of hard won experience have equipped Road Metals with operational insights few other companies can match, much of it gained during severe applications.

Our fleet of Mack and Volvo tractors and trucks are true multi-taskers. As well as aggregate haulage duties they drag a wide range of specialist trailing equipment around the country, including tippers, bottom-dumpers, low-loaders, mobile screening and crushing-plants.

MOBILE CRUSHING

Our focus on mobile crushing gives us a dimension that few other companies can match.

Road Metals mobile plants achieve unrivalled levels of proficiency and productivity. Our economies of operation have allowed many projects, large and small, to be undertaken that may have otherwise proved uneconomic.

All mobile plants are track mounted or mounted on semi-chassis and are road legal which gives us the capability to tender for aggregate production nation-wide.

Various units including pugmills, jaw crushers, cone crushers, impact crushers, Barmac crushers, aggregate wash plants, sand dewatering plants and multi-deck screening plants enable Road Metals to produce a vast array of aggregate products.

CONCRETE

Road Metals originally expanded into ready mix concrete over two decades ago in Christchurch under the Kiwi Concrete brand. Since then we have expanded into other parts of Conterbury and Otago. Kiwi Concrete operate from fixed batching plants and also mobile batching plants that can service larger projects.

All the Kiwi Concrete batching plants are independantly audited to confirm compliance with the NZRMCA Plant Audit Scheme.

The Kiwi Concrete truck fleet has also become synonymous with immaculate presentation and dependable performance.
